Welsh History
It is estimated that people have lived in the geographic region that today forms the nation of Wales for over 29,000 years. The Welsh people are sometimes called Celts in common with the people of Scotland and Ireland. The earliest signs of a Welsh nation come from the Middle Ages when kingdoms formed in north Wales in the area of Gwynedd and Powys and in South Wales.
By the time of the English invasions of Edward I there was still no united Welsh nation and the English were able to conquer the Welsh people due in part to their better weaponry and armour and organisation. The Welsh were forced to flee into the mountains of Snowdonia which led to the English building their 'iron ring' of castles.
In later times various uprisings attempted to retake control of the nation with varying degrees of success but all were ultimately doomed to fail.
