Welsh Assembly
The Welsh Assembly is the local government of Wales and is based primarily in the capital city of Cardiff. The assembly comprises of 60 members from the regions of Wales.
The assembly was formed following a referendum in 1997 and was created by the Government of Wales Act 1998. The powers relating to the old Welsh Office and Secretary of State for Wales were transferred to the Assembly.
In 2006 the Government of Wales Act 2006 was passed granting further powers to the assembly to initiate primary legislation. These powers are still subject to the veto of the Secretary of State or the United Kindgom Parliament.
