Tenby
Tenby is situated in a corner of Carmarthen Bay, sheltered by Caldey Island and is a centre for touring Pembrokeshire.
The high point of the town is dominated by the ancient parish church, one of the largest in Wales and, on Castle Hill, settled since the Iron Age, the 120-year old museum is a treasure of the town's history and an art gallery of distinction. The Museum founded in 1878 is housed in part of the remains of Tenby Castle and although looking deceptively small from the outside the museum has six spacious galleries and is one of the oldest independent museums in Wales. The town has been the premier resort of South Pembrokeshire since the 1700's and remains as such today. It is a town steeped in ancient history surrounded by an imposing stone wall, built in the 13th century. In the Middle Ages, Tenby was a busy medieval trading port, having prosperous sea trade with France and Spain, Ireland and England. One of the fifteenth century merchants' houses now belongs to the National Trust.
Caldey Island is an ancient religious settlement and today the home of a Cistercian community of monks who welcome visitors to the seclusion and rugged beauty of their refuge. The town also plays host to the Tenby Arts Festival every September.
