Machynlleth

Machynlleth is a small market town, set in the lower Dyfi Valley about 10 miles in from the coast.

Mayor's House MachynllethPlaces of interest include the historic Royal House, the Tabernacl arts centre, Parliament House (containing the Tourist Information Centre) and the clock tower, which stands nearly 80 feet tall in the centre of the town.

Machynlleth has a special role in Welsh history because of its connection with Owain Glyndwr, the last Prince of Wales to rebel against the English. Owain was crowned Prince of Wales in 1404 near the Parliament House, before himself and leaders from Scotland, France and Spain held parliament in the town making Machynlleth the ancient Welsh capital.

3 miles away the Centre for Alternative Technology, or CAT as it is known locally, was founded in the early 1970s, in a disused slate quarry, it is now the biggest tourist attraction in this part of Wales. CAT is dedicated to the promotion of more sustainable lifestyles, using technology both traditional and new. So you will see both water and solar power - the former used widely along the Dyfi Valley for generating electricity as little as 50 years ago.

Celtica, based in Plas Machynlleth in the parkland that fringes the town is a lively 'experience' of our Celtic past, present and future; there is also an Interpretative Centre about Welsh history. The Museum of Modern Art, Wales (MOMA Wales) is based around a former Wesleyan Chapel where choirs, chamber music and solo recitals are held frequently, there is an annual Machynlleth Festival held here every August.

The Wednesday street market attracts many people from afar with its great variety of traders and craftsmen. There is also an annual Carnival in July and the Owain Glyndwr festival in September.
