In years gone by, the river was the heart of the village, working two corn mills and a woollen mill (Pandy). Leats to Pentre Bach and Henblas drove water wheels to churn butter. Two further leats fed water wheels at Hendre Hall and Borthwen for grinding corn. From 1911 to 1961 the river drove a turbine supplying the village with electricity and to this day is providing water for the area via a new water treatment plant.

In the mid 1880s great changes occurred in the area. The railway was constructed and the coast road from Dolgellau to Tywyn was built. These new transport facilities attracted many visitors from the industrial centres of England to the locality. The Garthangharad Inn was extended and became a hotel in 1840. For many generations the inhabitants of the village were mostly farmers who grew wheat. In the early 20th century this gradually changed to sheep production.

A mile south of the village, just below the A493, is the wonderful mediaeval church of Llangelynin, always open to visitors. Over 600 years old and recently restored, it has a rare double horse bier, wall texts, a rare set of pews named for local fmailies, the grave of Abram Wood, King of the Welsh Gypsies, and, above all a deep sense of spirituality from its stunning position.

The village is named after the legendary giant, Gwril, whose domain was the coastal land nad the beaches of this area. A llwyn is a bush or grove in Welsh, so the village name means Gwril's grove.
