James Of St. George





James of St. George was the master architect of King Edward I and is responsible for many of the designs of the castles within North Wales including Conwy Castle, Caernarfon Castle, Beaumaris Castle, andRhuddlan Castle.

He is believed to have lived between 1230 and 1309 and is known to have worked on a number of European castles. Under the command of Edward he is known to have visited Wales in 1278 during which four castles where begun, Flint Castle, Rhuddlan Castle, Builth Castle, and Aberystwyth Castle.

In 1283 he began work on Harlech Castle which was completed by 1289.

The final castle designed by James of St. George was Beaumaris Castle which was begun in 1295 but was never completed. It is believed that Edward summononed James to Scotland around 1298.
