Ffestiniog Mountain Railway

Constructed at the height of the slate industry in the 19th century the Ffestiniog Mountain Railway in North Wales transported the slate from the quarries at Blaenau Ffestiniog down the valley to the sea at Portmadoc.

Built as a narrow gauge railway the small engines and wagons transported millions of tonnes of slate to the waiting ships to be exported around the world.

The railway closed as a commercial enterprise with the decline of the slate industry but was reopened as a tourist attraction by a group of enthuasists in the 1950's.

Today the Ffestiniog Mountain Railway is one of the most popular tourist attractions in North Wales with tens of thousands of visitors every year. The journey takes you on the original path down the valley from the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog through some stunning southern Snowdonia countryside to the terminus at Porthmadog.

The Ffestiniog Mountain Railway is also often referred to as the Blaenau Ffestiniog Mountain Railway.
