Conwy CastleBuilt by King Edward I in the 13th century the castle dominates the Conwy skyline. The castle overlook's the Conwy Estuary and can be seen from as far away as Llandudno. Conwy Castle was built as part of the 'iron ring' of fortresses to subdue the Welsh uprisings and when seen from across the estuary is one of the best views of medieval castles available anywhere in Wales. Today the huge grey walls tower over the estuary and the town of Conwy. The castle is open to visitors and you are free to explore the ancient fortress at your own pace and get a feel for just how powerful the castle was once as a means of protecting the estaury. Construction of the castle began in 1283 following the design of Edward I's master architect James of St. George and was designed to protect the English colony that was placed here. The town of Conwy is completely enclosed by walls which can still be walked around today. Access to the castle is via the visitor centre, which like all castles in Wales is under the control of CADW the agency responsible for the maintenance of Welsh castles. Getting to Conwy CastleThe town of Conwy and it's castle stands just off the A55 dual carriageway that runs the length of North Wales. It is approximately 45 minutes drive from Chester and the English Border and is about 70 minutes by car from Manchester Airport or Liverpool.
