CarmarthenCarmarthen is a lively market town overlooking the Tywi River and is the administrative centre for the county. Carmarthen Museum is a large regional museum housed in the former palace of the Bishop of St. David's. The building was first established in 1283 and the original chapel, although much altered, is still in existence. The museum has an excellent collection displaying archaeology, pottery, dairying, prints, furniture, geology, costumes and the folk life of the local area. The castle at Carmarthen is on a rocky eminence overlooking the River Tywi. The Roman fort must have dominated the Roman town a thousand years before and in the 18th and 19th centuries the castle was converted into a prison. Carmarthen is a thriving market town with distinct shopping areas varying from the new Greyfriars Centre to the covered market and precinct with its numerous shops and stalls selling quality local produce.
