Cardigan
Cardigan is a seaport and the capital of Cardiganshire. It is situated on the River Teifi on Cardigan Bay. Cardigan was the busiest port in the whole of Wales, before the use of steamships.
Cardigan Castle did not survive the Civil War and was partly blown up in 1645 so all that remains now are odd bits of the structure. Built in the 12th-century by Henry II, the imposing outer walls dominate the historically important river crossing bridging Ceredigion with Pembrokeshire. The site and ruins of the existing castle are privately owned.
At the castle, in 1176, the very first truly "national" Eisteddfod of Wales was hosted. The Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales revisited Cardigan in 1976 to commemorate the eight hundredth anniversary of the original event.
Cardigan is a busy market town and offers excellent indoor sports and leisure facilities at the Leisure Centre, and has a cinema and art provisions at Theatr Mwldan. Just outside Cardigan there is a wildlife park with many birds and animals.
The shrine of Our Lady of the Taper, situated in the area, is the national shrine of the Roman Catholic Church in Wales. Another place to visit is the Aberteifi Heritage Centre, which displays the history of Cardigan and its port.
