Cardiff, South Wales

Cardiff is Wales capital city and is largely a creation of the industiral revolution of the 19th and early 20th centuries when it became the busiest coal-exporting port in the world.

Cardiff is the major administrative, business and cultural centre within Wales. The city boasts many attractions such as shops, museums, a medieval castle and theatres. There is lots to see and do within the city for both residents and tourists alike.

Cardiff Castle is located in the heart of the city and was transformed into a glittering mansion in the 19th century by Lord Bute. The castle grounds are also home to The Welsh Regimental Museum, The Queen's Dragoon Guards Museum and Bute Park.

Cardiff's world renowned Civic Centre is set within parklands and houses government offices, law courts, the National Museum of Wales, and Cardiff's university campus. One of the prime buildings in this region is the City Hall, which was the venue for the European Council in June 1998.

The old docklands, south of the city centre, have been transformed by the Cardiff Bay development. A barrage across the estuary has given the city a freshwater lake and 8 miles of new waterfront and is the home of the new Welsh Assembly. Around the remodelled Inner Harbour are attractions such as Techniquest, the hands-on science discovery centre and the Norwegian Church which is now a cafe and art gallery. The ornate, red-bricked Pierhead Building and impressive Mount Stuart Square are upstanding reminders of the Cardiff's wealthy Victorian heyday.

Cardiff is a sporting city, which in recent years has widened its range of activities and facilities with rugby, football and other sports, it is also home to one of Britain's top ice hockey teams. In 1999 Cardiff hosted the Rugby World Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, which is next door to the older legendary Cardiff Arms Park stadium.

The University of Wales Institute, Cardiff Medical School, The Welsh College of Music and Drama and Cardiff University itself make up a student population of over 25,000 within the city and the University boasts some of the Welsh capital's most beautiful buildings as well as the biggest student union in Britain.

More and more business meetings, trade fairs and exhibitions are attracted to Cardiff by the range of facilities on offer. These include the Cardiff International Arena and St. David's Hall, all of which are within easy walking distance of the city centre.
