Blaenau Ffestiniog Railway

The Blaenau Ffestiniog Railway is a narrow gauge railway which began life as a means to transport the large amounts of slate quarried from the mountains of southern Snowdonia to the sea port of Porthmadog.

The railway has been operational since 1832 and as the slate trade flourished so did the towns of Blaenau Ffestiniong and Porthmadog. As the slate trade diminished the railway struggled to remain open and eventually closed in 1946. Fortunately railway enthusiasts refused to allow the railway to remain closed and it reopened in 1954 as a tourist attraction.

The journey covers a distance of 13½ miles through some spectacular scenery overlooking the valleys of southern Snowdonia.
