Blaenau Ffestiniog, North WalesBlaenau Ffestiniog is world famous as a centre for the mining and production of slate. The town lies within the county of Gwynedd in the area of southern Snowdonia. The town flourished during the 19th century along with the slate trade and grew rapidly however with the diminishment of the industury in the latter part of the 20th century Blaenau Ffestiniog has had to find other ways to grow. Visitors can tour the Llechwedd Slate Caverns and see the history and effects of the slate industry first hand. The town is also home to the Blaenau Ffestiniog Railway which began life in the 19th century transporting slate from the local mines to the nearby port of Porthmadog.
