Bethesda, Gwynedd, North WalesBethesda is 6 miles inland from Bangor on the A5, on the northern edge of the Snowdonia National Park. The old slate town of Bethesda lies at the foot of the Nant Ffrancon Pass and has splendid views over the Snowdonia Mountains; at the head of the pass is Llyn Ogwyn. The village is best known as a starting point to discover the delights of walking or climbing Snowdonia. The slopes of Bethesda bear the gouges created by the largest opencast slate quarry in the world, Penrhyn Quarry. From here the slate was transported a short distance to the sea at Port Penrhyn in Bangor. You can visit the Joys of Life Visitor Centre, which has railway mementos, models, old toys and radios. There is also a quarryman's kitchen and aircraft relics.
