Beaumaris Castle, Anglesey, North Wales

Beaumaris Castle on AngleseyBeaumaris Castle is located on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales and is situated looking eastwards towards the Menai Straits and the mountains of Snowdonia. The castle is within the town of Beaumaris and can most easily be reached by car from the A55 dual carriageway which is clearly signposted from the Britannia Bridge.

Work commenced on Beaumaris Castle in 1295 on the orders of King Edward I of England as part of his second phase in completing his iron ring to subdue the Welsh uprisings that occured during this period. Although it was never completed it was the largest castle of its type at the time due to its unique design as a concentric castle and visitors can walk around the castle walls and inner courtyards getting a feel for the power this castle would have possessed.

Beaumaris Castle is the only major castle on the Isle of Anglesey and is currently maintained by CADW.
