Bangor, Gwynedd, North WalesBangor is a university and cathedral city located between the Snowdonia Mountains and the Menai Straits and it boasts the longest High Street in Wales. The city dates from a monastery in the sixth century, which had a protective fence or bangor round it. The city is only about 15 miles from Mount Snowdon making it an ideal base to tour Snowdonia and Anglesey. Bangor Cathedral was founded in 525 AD, only the second cathedral in Britain. Nothing remains of that early structure. The nave and tower are early Tudor, and tombs of 13th century Welsh princes reside in the south transept. Nearby Penrhyn Castle is a dramatic neo-Norman Castle. The castle contains fascinating 'Norman' style furniture panelling and plasterwork, all designed by the architect, and houses an outstanding collection of paintings by old masters. The stable block attached contains an industrial railway museum and model room, a National Trust shop, a countryside exhibition, a doll museum and two galleries.
