AberdareThe town of Aberdare is located within the Cynon Valley, Cardiff lies 23 miles to the south. Aberdare was a secluded agricultural area until 1757 when an Ironworks opened at Hirwaun and then within Aberdare itself. Iron production tailed off at the beginning of the twentieth century; the main industry then became coal mining. Following the end of World War II the coal mines in the area mostly became depleted and were progressively closed; there is only one underground mine, Tower Colliery remaining. Ten kilometres north of the town is the start of the Brecon Beacons National Park, an area of mountains of great natural beauty, and a mecca for hikers and walkers of all types, many caves, underground rivers, and waterfalls are located in the area; many of which can be visited. Situated just outside the town of Aberdare, Dare Valley Country Park has almost 500 acres of moorland, meadow, lake and woodland, a Valley Inheritance Centre and exhibition gallery.
